Creek to Bay Cleanup Day

     Coastal Cleanup the Napa Way

     Saturday, September 25, 2010
                  9 am to 12 pm

Kennedy Park

Site Captain: Napa Valley Fly Fishers

Kid friendly.
This site can be found at the end of Streblow Drive by following signs to Kennedy Park, just past Napa Valley College. Each year volunteers clean up the Park and boat launch areas along the Napa River. In 2009, 47 volunteers removed 1125 pounds of trash and 540 pounds of recyclables along approximately two miles of the Napa River. This is an excellent site for students who attend the college, families who use Kennedy Park, and anyone interested in seeing how the Flood Control Project is changing the look of the River.

Napa Creek

Site Captain: In Harm’s Way

Volunteers will help cleanup Napa Creek alongside members of In Harm’s Way, a recently formed group made up of residents that live along the creek. The site’s downtown location guarantees there will be a lot of trash and debris to pick up. In 2009, 42 volunteers cleaned 420 pounds of trash and 264 pounds of recyclables from 2.0 miles of the creek. Volunteers will meet behind the Firefighter’s Museum located on the corner of Main and Pearl Streets in downtown Napa.

Napa River Ecological Preserve

Site Captains: Napa-Solano Audubon and Chip Bouril, Natural Resources Conservation Service

Volunteers will help clean up the Napa River in this 73 acre Preserve owned by the California Department of Fish and Game. Every year, there are never enough volunteers to collect all the trash and debris that visitors leave behind. In 2009, 50 volunteers removed 415 pounds of trash and 180 pounds of recyclables. The Preserve is located on Yountville Cross Road between the Town of Yountville and the Silverado Trail.  The Preserve is a wonderful place for families to take a nature walk and see the Napa River meandering down the middle of the valley.

Napa River Trail

Site Captain: 1st Christian Church

Come and help out with the third cleanup of the Napa River Trail! In 2009, 40 volunteers removed 800 pounds of trash and 300 pounds of recyclables from a 1.5 miles stretch along the river. Walking along the Napa River Trail gives a view that few Napa residents have seen. You'll see ducks and other wildfowl and probably a fisherman or two angling for striped bass, trout, or other fish. It's a very peaceful area, protected from traffic and other sounds of the city. For more information on the meeting location, call 707-252–4188x111.

Riverside Drive in Napa

Site Captain: Friends of the Napa River (FONR)

This site is located on Riverside Drive which runs along the Napa River South of the Hatt Building in Napa. Last year, 30 volunteers collected 600 pounds of trash along this one mile stretch of the Napa River. This year FONR will lead the effort to clean up this downtown stretch of the Napa River’s shoreline. Volunteers will meet on Riverside Dr. at the end of Elm St., located south of the Napa City-County Library and the Hatt Building in Napa.

Salvador Creek

Site Captain: Louann Talbert, Napa Valley CanDo

Kid friendly.
Volunteers will join Louann in a cleanup of Salvador Creek. In 2009, 85 volunteers removed 600 pounds of trash and 256 pounds of recyclables from the creek. This is a great site for families. Meet at the Vintage High School cafeteria at the east end of Trower Avenue in Napa.

Southern Crossing Bridge

Site Captain: Penny Proteau, Sierra Club

Kid friendly.
This site is located underneath the George F. Butler Bridge (a.k.a the Southern Crossing Bridge). This is where the Napa River approaches the marshes and sloughs before entering San Pablo Bay. In 2009, 20 volunteers removed 670 pounds of trash and 240 pounds of recyclables along one mile of the Napa River at this site. It’s a good site for people who enjoy viewing wildlife. Volunteers will meet at the chain link fence at the end of Soscol Ferry Road.

South Wetland Opportunity Area

Site Captain: Anna Mattinson, Napa RCD

Kid friendly.
This site, located at the extreme southern end of Jefferson Street in Napa, is normally off limits to the public. Last year, 66 volunteers removed 1010 pounds of trash and 484 pounds of recyclables along a 2.0 mile stretch of the river. Park on Jefferson St. and go through the chain link fence gate and walk toward the Napa River. This is a good site for volunteers who enjoy bird watching, and for those who would like to see the progress that the Flood Control Project has made. Hundreds of acres of newly restored wetlands await the volunteers at this site.
