Spring Creek Stewardship Group

Initiated by Spottswoode Winery, the Selby Creek Watershed Stewardship came together to implement restoration and revegetation prescriptions identified by BioEngineering Associates as a result of a survey completed by BioEngineering Associates in 2000.

Restoration project goals included:

  • Re-contouring unstable vertical banks where possible and stabilizing/revegetating using plant-based bioengineering methods;
  • Reversing down-cutting trend and stabilizing the in-channel gradient, thereby reducing downstream sedimentation;
  • Stabilizing, protecting, and maintaining the remaining large, older riparian trees;
  • Encouraging naturally occurring native vegetation with protective management and irrigation;
  • Increasing the density of sparse riparian areas with plantings of native grasses, shrubs, and trees; and
  • Managing invasive exotics such as Himalayan blackberry, vinca, and English ivy.

With funding from the Department of Water Resources Urban Streams Program, the restoration project along Selby Creek was completed in 2005.
