Water in Napa County - an overview

Water issues

Flooding

  • 27 significant floods have been reported since 1862
  • Over $542 million in flood damage since 1960
  • Voters approved Measure A, a flood protection sales tax in March 1998
  • Napa River/Napa Creek Flood Protection Project, currently under way, aims to protect against 100-year floods on both streams while following the Living River Guidelines

Water supply for people

  • in cities, meeting current demands requires the combination of reservoir storage & imports from State Water Project
  • unincorporated area demands met by combination of surface and groundwater
  • projections through 2050 show increasing shortfalls during dry periods, especially in unincorporated areas
  • depletion of groundwater a rising concern
  • surface water diversions may conflict with fish needs
  • recycled water use is increasing

Fish habitat

  • low springtime creek flows may inhibit fish passage & keep fish from thriving
  • timing of surface water diversions for human use is important for fish
  • increased & concentrated surface runoff destroys fish habitat

Groundwater

  • sparse long-term monitoring by state Department of Water Resources
  • identified groundwater basins include Napa Valley main basin, Milliken-Sarco-Tulucay basin, and Carneros basin
  • human use is primarily for irrigation and rural residential wells
  • recharge of groundwater not keeping up with human use
  • groundwater levels especially threatened in Milliken-Sarco-Tulucay
